MG’s new ZS EV Excite is Australia’s cheapest electric car

The MG ZS EV Excite is finally available in Australia – and what’s more, the price makes it the cheapest electric vehicle in the country.

The new MG ZS EV (Excite and Essence models) comes with a larger battery than last year’s model. Prices start at $44,990, which is lower than the BYD Atto 3 in all states except Tasmania. The Atto 3 is the cheapest new electric car on the market.

MG ZS EV Excite battery and range

Of course, the main thing you’ll want to know when it comes to a new electric vehicle is range. The ZS EV Excite has a WLTP range of 320 km, powered by a 51 kWh battery. The battery size is a significant upgrade over the MG ZS EV, which is 44.5kWh and has a WLTP range of 263km.

In addition, the grille of the ZS EV Excite hides an updated Type 2 charging port. If you don’t know much about charging technology, it’s one of the most popular in Australia. 

MG ZS EV Excite vs. MG ZS EV Petrol

In addition to the MG ZS EV Excite, the luxury model, the MG ZS EV Petrol, is also available.

The MG ZS EV Excite and MG ZS EV Petrol both have 17-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera, a 360-degree camera, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and phone support. Android Auto support. A seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty also applies.

In addition, both cars are equipped with the MG Pilot system, a suite of car safety programs. This includes intelligent high beam control, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, emergency lane keeping and speed assist. MG ZS EV Petrol drivers can expect more luxurious additions. 

These features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a panoramic sunroof, a six-speaker sound system, power-folding mirrors, wireless phone charging, heated front seats, and the driver’s seat with six settings.

Pricing and Availability of MG ZS EV Excite

Available now in Australia, the MG ZS EV Excite costs $44,990, excluding state tax ($2,000 more than the original MG ZS EV). It was originally supposed to be $46,990 but MG changed the price of the car once it became available in Australia.

If you’re feeling luxurious, the MG ZS EV Petrol will set you back $48,990 before taxes (down from the original $49,990).

This month, BYD also launched the Atto 3 EV, a vehicle with an expected range of up to 480 km (two models will be available: one with a 50.1 kWh battery pack and the other with a 50.1 kWh battery pack. 60.4 kWh battery pack).

Considering the BYD Atto 3 has a base price of $44,990 (in Tasmania, though it’s higher in other states) and $47,381 for the top model, it’s safe to expect these cars to be gay competition in the low-cost electric car space to that of July.
